Department of Telecommunications and Wireless Technology
Welcome to the home page of the Telecommunication & Wireless Technologies (DTWT) in the School of Information Technology and Computing (SITC) at the American University of Nigeria.
The department offers cutting-edge accredited undergraduate engineering oriented courses and a graduate program leading to the Master of Telecommunication and Ph.D. degree in a conducive environment. The DTWT is a dynamic unit within SITC that has established a reputation for excellence in teaching, research and service to the local, national, and international communities. The American style of teaching in AUN is widely recognized and our professors have won many teaching awards at the Faculty, University and national levels. Our faculty members are recognised for internationally acclaimed research in the area of electrical engineering.
The DTWT B.Sc. Program in Telecommunications &Wireless Technologies is designed with core courses that provide breadth and depth in the field, along with a strong theoretical component as a foundation for a good engineering career. The distribution of courses includes the fundamentals needed by every telecommunication and wireless engineer. It includes courses in the sciences and mathematics and an in-depth sequence of specialized computer courses. The program provides a balance of both theory and practice on core courses covering both software and hardware through integrated lecture, laboratory sequences and individual and group projects often with direct application in the community or region.
Our graduates are very attractive to industry, government agencies and graduate school all over the word. Many of our graduates are working with the top telecoms companies while some have been accepted into world Class University. We are always happy to present the success stories and aspirations of some of our Alumni. A large number of our Alumni occupy leadership positions all over the world. Graduates of the AUN telecoms and wireless program will be prepared for careers in Telecommunication Engineering and the general IT field. Some of the possible job titles our graduates can expect to hold include:
• Telecom policy and regulations (e.g Nigeria Communication Commission - NCC)
• Mobile/Telecommunication Operators, e.g. MTN, GLO, NITEL, NTA, AIT, AUN, etc.
• Infrastructure provider (e.g ITU-T / Internet)
• Manages institution networking (e,g NNPC, Airport, Government, Universities etc.)
• Data centre & Cloud Services (e.g Google, Yahoo, Emerson, Oil & Gas Company etc.)
• Satellite communication (e.g NigComSat, Telesat, International Satellite Communications etc.)
• Research & Development (e.g AT&T, 3GPP, Samsung, Apple, Motorola, LG Electronics etc.)
• Systems engineer (e.g ERICSON, Huawei, NOKIA, CISCO System, Siemens, Alcatel-Lucent)
• Other includes IT Director, IT Project Manager, Engineering Sales and Consulting Engineering Firms
In order for our students to improve their professional career and skills in Engineering, we encourage as well prepare them for professional examinations such as CCNA, CCNP, and CWNP. We also encourage our students to resister with local and international professional bodies such as Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE, USA) and Institute of Electrical Technology (IET, UK).
Again, we welcome you to our web site and to our Department and wish you much success. I hope you will enjoy browsing our website and that you will not hesitate to get in contact with us, as a prospective student, a returning alumnus, or a potential research collaborator!
