Over 300 secondary school students from Adamawa State were at AUN during the Yola

Peace Day of December 1, competing for a prize in the Whizkid competition in science, technology engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The competition which featured 20 secondary schools had students competing in the four categories: Science, Technology , Engineering, and Mathematics.

Dr Fidelis Ndeh-Che, an Assistant Professor in the School o f Information Technology & Computing who oversees the STEM project said the competition is one of the strategies to motivate students
towards the study of sci ence, technology, engineering , and mathematics. He described it is an off-shoot of the Whiz-kid Club whose objective is to “identify and nurture talents in the area of academics at a very young age so that they can be focused in the direction of their dreams. The goal is to produce hi-tech scientists from Y ola, Adamawa State. ”

Each of the winning schools in each of the categories had a cash prize of N70, 000 while the runnersup had N30, 000.

In Science, Lutheran Junior Seminary, Mbamba, near Yola, emerged winner while Ahmadu Ribadu College, Yola, was the
runner-up . In technology , AUN Academy , Yola, was winner while Ahmadu Ribadu College, Yola was runner up. In engineering, Capital Government Day Secondary School, Yola, came first while General Murtala Muhammed College, Yola, was the
runner-up . In the mathematics category, Federal Government Girls College, Y ola, came first w h ile Lutheran Junior Seminary , Mbamba, was the runner-up .

The STEM Project nurtures and g rows academic talents in the sciences, engineering, technology , and mathematics through the effort of AUN students who encourage and help secondary school students in Adamawa State to establish Whizkid Clubs in their schools while they mentor them.
